Fungsi orthosis antara lain untuk;
- memperbaiki atau mengkoreksi alignment anggota tubuh
- membantu atau mengkontrol pergerakan sendi.
- penyangga, maka dari itu mengurangi beban
- pelindung dari gangguan fisik
Sedangkan prostesis adalah alat yang dirancang untuk menggantikan fungsi atau penampilan dari ekstremitas bawah yang hilang akibat amputasi karena kecelakaan, penyakit diabetes atau bawaan menjadi semaksimal mungkin meskipun tidak 100% sebagai pengganti bagian tubuh yang hilang. Sebaliknya, ortosis dirancang untuk mendukung, melengkapi, dan atau menambah fungsi dari ekstremitas bawah yang ada.
Prosthesis dianggap berfungsi jika dalam pemakainnya stabil, selaras, dan seimbang. Contoh dari prosthesis antara lain tangan palsu, kaki palsu bawah lutut, kaki palsu atas lutut, dsb.
